What's in a Matcha Starter Set – and What You Actually Need

Search “matcha starter set” and most of what you find is a bag of somebody’s powder with tools attached – you are choosing your matcha and your kit in one blind purchase. We sell the tools only, which gives us a clearer way to answer the real question: what do you actually need on day one? Less than the bundles suggest.

The two essentials

  1. A bamboo whisk (chasen). The one tool with no good substitute – it is what turns powder and water into a smooth, foamed drink instead of bitter sludge. £8.99 in our shop. If you buy one thing, buy this.
  2. Something wide to whisk in. Ideally a matcha bowl (11-13 cm, rounded base – why width matters); honestly, a rounded cereal bowl gets you started.

The two worth adding early

  1. A whisk holder. Once the whisk has dried standing upright, the holder keeps it in its bell shape between bowls, so the prongs do not set bent in a drawer. Drying it fully first keeps mould away. From £5.99.
  2. A bamboo scoop (chashaku). One big heaped scoop ≈ 2 g, a light one ≈ 1 g – a repeatable dose without digging out the scales. From £2.99.

A small kitchen sieve you already own covers sifting. A storage tin (from £3.99) matters once you care about keeping opened matcha fresh – but it is a week-two purchase, not a day-one one.

What about the powder?

Choose it separately, from a tea seller you trust, in a small tin first. That is the actual advantage of a tools-only set: your kit does not lock you into anyone’s matcha, and when you find the powder you love, the tools do not change. Every set works with every brand – the method is identical.

FAQ

Do matcha sets come with matcha?

Ours deliberately do not – so you choose the powder yourself. Most powder-included sets are built around the seller’s own tea.

Is a matcha set worth it over buying separately?

Ours are priced a little under the sum of their parts, but the real value is fit: the whisk suits the bowl, the holder suits the whisk. Buying separately is entirely reasonable too – start with the whisk.

Which set is best for a gift?

The 4-Piece Speckled Matcha Set (£29.99) for most people; the 7-Piece Crackle Matcha Set (£36.99) when you want the sifter and cloth as well. Add a scoop to either.
